Lead base paint!! is lead still in the paint?

Many home owners and professionals alike that are concerned about Lead base paint.

A:  If your house is built before 1950 it is almost 100% guaranteed that you have lead in the paint.   In 1950 the government stared to mandate the reduction and ultimately stopping the use of lead in the paint production in 1978.

All Paints in the USA that were manufactured after 1978 are lead base free.

Lead base paint by it self is not bad or harmful, however the concern is if a kid scratches a or bites the paint or an unknowing person sands the paint and the dust is air born then the dust could get induced and exposure is a health hazard.

Solution:  If you think you might have lead base paint please do not tackle it yourself, call us if you live in So Cal area or call your local painting contractor.

If you think you’ve been exposed to lead base dust contact your doctor and he / she may run some tests on you.

Oil base paint!!

Depending on where you live, in the Los Angeles area oil base paint is banned in one gallons and can still be purchased in quarts, go figure.  So it is only a matter of time before the EPA and other air quality agencies will ban the use of oil base paint completely.  When I stared painting in 1974 in Melbourne Australia even the flat paint was oil base, we had lots of fun painting however we always had headaches and had to drink milk every day.  Come to find out we felt happy cause we got high on the smell of the oil base and then we crashed thus the headaches.

Solution:

There are many great Acrylic and polymer paints in the market already.  Some of the best rust inhibitors are water base paints.

Another question I get is how often should I paint my house?

The interior paint keeps its sheen and color for a longer period of the than the exterior.  Traffic areas like hallway kitchens and family room usually get painting more than the rest of the house.  The life span on interior paint exceeds 8 -10 years.  I would recommend painting the interior between 3-5 years to keep thing fresh, clean and exciting by changing the colors especially if you easily get bored with things.

The closets can be painted every other paint job.
